My Writing
I've been writing since I was about four years old. My first story was Tokiss, a story about a lonely little boy. I continued writing stories and poems throughout my childhood, and when I was twelve my grandfather collected my early writings in a volume called Rhymes and Reasons.
Since that time I've written some more stories, as well as essays and letters. In 2005 I gave a concert of my original songs, at NYU. And I wrote the words to one of the songs on the Happy Bees! album, released by TNK Records. However, I've devoted myself mainly to writing plays and musicals. This is a list of my major projects as a playwright:
A full-length original musical, written with composer Jessica Fogle. Developed at NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
Presented as a reading at NYU's Black Box Theatre in April 2002, under the direction of Lori Steinberg and musical direction of Vadim Feichtner. Cast included Donna Vivino, Megan McGinnis, and Julie Dingman.
Produced in January 2004 at the Spirit of Broadway Theatre in Norwich, Connecticut, under the direction of Brett Bernardini.
Miss Milligan's Third-Grade Class Presents...
A new adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm, as it might be re-envisioned by an
elementary school teacher. Additional script material was contributed by
Jessica Shapiro.
Produced in July 2003 at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre in New York City, under the direction of Meredith Zolty.
Gawain and the Green Knight
A one-act musical, based on the medieval legend, written with composer Christian Imboden. Developed at the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
Presented as a reading at NYU's Black Box Theatre in March 2001, under the direction of Jeff Edgerton and musical direction of Vadim Feichtner. Cast included Chad Kimball and Kendra Kassebaum.
Rumpelstiltskin
A new one-act musical version of the story from the Brothers Grimm. Presented at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in June 2000.
Pinocchio
A new adaptation of Carlo Collodi's Adventures of Pinocchio, using elements of Japanese puppetry, mask, verse, and traditional musical theatre.
Produced at the Levels Youth Center in Great Neck, NY in August 1997, under the author's direction.
little girls' dreams
An original full-length movement piece in two parts, set to excerpts from classical music. Based on an original short story.
Part One was presented at the Levels Youth Center in August 1995; Part Two was presented the following summer. Both productions were directed by the author.
The script for this piece won third place in the Judy Lee Award for Dramatic Writing.
The Old Man and the Sea / Athena
These plays were written in 1993 and 1994, respectively, for the Odyssey of the Mind competitions in Nassau County.
The Old Man and the Sea, a comic retelling of the story by Ernest Hemingway, was the winner of the 1993 Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award.
Athena, which borrowed story elements from Homer's Iliad (and included Homer as a character), won first place in the Nassau County competition and was shown at the statewide competition.
Good Intentions
An original one-act play co-written with James Forrest. Presented at the Levels Youth Center in July 1993. The production was directed by the authors.
